This was such a fun story with a cliffhanger that left me wanting more! Our main character, Flair, gave up on magic, but found herself back in the world's epicenter of the craft after her beloved grandmother passed away, leaving her business to her. Little did she know, that quaint little bakery in the small town came with her grandmother's other customers looking for a tarot reading.
Flair moved back to Rattleboro, Kansas with her daughter in tow and needless to say, she has a hard time keeping magic at bay. With the town's extravagant Halloween celebrations upon her, she winds up baking tarot card cookies with a very special ingredient. The cookies, based upon her family's legacy deck, set off a chain of events that draw her magic-hungry mother to town, encourage her daughter to pursue the craft, and attract the attention of Flair's ex who'd left her heartbroken many years ago.
This story had so much heart and such an interesting concept! I really loved the history and impact the family's tarot deck had on them and all the little crazy things that kept happening throughout the book. I enjoyed the centering on family with many different relationships as well as the little touch of romance. It started out pretty wholesome and cozy and then toward the end things just get insane!
A funny story with this book -- I had started reading it but paused to read a Christmas book during the holidays and then kind of forgot about it. But then months later I found myself thinking about those tarot card cookies and, "Whatever happened with that? Did I ever finish that book?" Come to find out, I had not and was very excited to pick it back up!
I really didn't expect this book to have such a big ending with a cliffhanger. I'm anxiously awaiting the second installment in the series!
A big thank you to KJ Dell'Antonia, Penguin Group - Putnam, and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC copy of Playing The Witch Card!
